DESCRIPTION: Ethical and legal documentation of mental health services can be overwhelming. Medicaid and other major Insurance guidelines are more confusing than ever, and we all fear the ever-threatening retractions and audits. As professional counselors, we want to help as many people as possible while unburdening the paperwork so that we can be most effective in doing what we love: serving people. Through this workshop, you’ll develop an understanding of the “payer perspective” when documenting all types of therapy sessions (including play therapy) and techniques for more professional and less time-consuming note taking. This workshop will teach effective tools for navigating medical necessity, incorporating evidence-based information into treatment planning and documenting therapy sessions.
Participants will be able to:
- Recall 3 ethical considerations for documentation per the ACA Code of Ethics
- Identify at least 3 components of medical necessity as it applies to documentation in an ethical manner
- Demonstrate at least 3 documentation skills for completing clinical notes ethically
- Identify common retractions in audits and how to ethically document and bill services to avoid costly audit mishaps.
