Dr. Robert Jason Grant created AutPlay therapy as a method of treatment used within pediatric counseling focused on children between the ages of 3 to 18. It is an approach that uses the concept of play therapy to assist in treating children with diagnoses such as autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, developmental disability, physical disability, sensory issues, and social anxiety.

Examples of AutPlay therapy activities include a number of typical activities a child would engage in. A therapist-directed session could involve any of the following:

  • Drawing
  • Simon says
  • Completing a story with puppets or stuffed animals
  • I spy

Keep in mind that the therapist directs these purposeful activities. For example, the purpose of the drawing activity is to draw an emotion or draw a person and use a specific color for the emotion they are feeling.

Parent-Led Therapy

AutPlay therapy is designed to be not only a counselor-led treatment but also parent-led. Parents are educated on techniques that they can implement in the home environment so their child receives consistent behavioral therapies. This play-based approach encompasses the child’s natural expression and allows you as the parent to be involved. Through AutPlay therapy, you and the therapist will teach your child skills such as self-control, social skills, and relational connection.

AutPlay Therapy is Effective

In addition to the skills addressed above, you may also see improvement in your child in  the following areas through the use of AutPlay.

  • Sensory processing
  • Reducing anxiety
  • Focus/attention related to Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder
  • Emotional regulation
  • Down syndrome
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Learning disorders
  • Tourette syndrom
