There are just too many decisions. I am feeling overwhelmed. Sound familiar? Believe it or not, decision fatigue is a real thing. And if you choose us as your Alabama therapist, we can help!
Defining Decision Fatigue
An article published in the US National Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health defines decision fatigue as “the impaired ability to make decisions and control behavior as a consequence of repeated acts of decision-making.” Some choices are obviously second nature, like when to get something to drink or go to the bathroom. However, for some simple daily decisions like what to have for lunch or which pair of shoes to wear can be overwhelming. When the multitude of decisions you face starts weighing too heavily, it can start affecting you mentally and physically.
What Does it Look Like?
Feeling weary could be overlooked simply because you had a busy day. However, when we learn to become aware of the “why” we’re run down, we can start regaining control and energy. When we become overstressed, it’s quite common to shut down or make impulsive choices. So it is all the more important to learn how to manage the stack of decisions we are facing before things get out of hand.
Let’s take a look at a few signs that point to decision fatigue.
- Indecisiveness
- Making impulsive decisions
- Procrastinating
- Avoiding the decision all together
Over time, feeling weary and avoiding decisions can lead to anxiety and increased stress. Through our counseling services in Alabama, we have treated many clients suffering from decision fatigue and have the expertise to help you too.
