Program Content Description: This training will explore the biological mechanism underlying Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). As ADHD is a developmental disorder, the basics of neurological development will be covered first. Then, based on current neuroscience research, the biological mechanisms and pharmacological treatments of ADHD will be discussed including effects of long-term treatment on the brain structures.

Learning Objectives Include:

  • Counselor will be able to list the developmental time course of the brain
  • Counselor will be able to identify the role of the frontal lobe and dopamine in executive functioning
  • Counselor will increase understanding in the hypothetical biological causes of ADHD
  • Counselor will be able to connect the behavioral characteristics of ADHD to the biological mechanisms
  • Counselor will be able to list how pharmacological treatment of ADHD works in the brain
  • Counselor will be able to list potential effects of long-term pharmacological treatment of ADHD on the brain
