What is Play Therapy?

Play therapy is defined by the Association for Play Therapy as “the systematic use of a theoretical model to establish an interpersonal process wherein trained play therapist use the therapeutic powers of play to help clients prevent or resolve psychological difficulties and achieve optimal growth and development.” Basically, play therapy is interacting with the child in a way the complements their current development and uses play as the language. This therapy allows the counselor to see into the child’s world.

Who Does Play Therapy Help?

The best results with play therapy is seen in children ages 3 to 12. However, research is now showing impressive benefits for teenagers and adults.

Play therapy has been shown to greatly affect behavior, social skills, anxiety/depression, grief/loss, and more.

What Else Should I Know?

An important note to consider when it comes to play therapy is that results are best when the parent or caregiver has an active role in the process. In most cases, six sessions was enough to show positive results.
