Counselor Maya, ALC

Maya joined the Garrett Counseling team in 2023, the same year she became a licensed counselor. She is an Associate Licensed Counselor (ALC04617) under the supervision of Dr. Ashley Garrett, PhD, LPC-S, RPT-S, ACS, NCC (LPC-S #0856). Maya has a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of West Alabama.

Maya enjoys working with children and adolescents between the ages of 6 to 17 years of age who are facing behavioral issues, anxiety, and depression. She frequently uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), as well as play therapy techniques. Maya says, “CBT in therapy will help clients identify maladaptive thoughts, understand their actions when those thoughts occurs, and ultimately replace them with positive thoughts using helpful coping skills. Play therapy techniques allow my young clients to express themselves using creativity.”

Maya practices wellness by traveling, exercising, and spending time with family and friends. She has an energetic black lab named Maverick. A few interesting facts to help you get to know Maya better: Her favorite books include the Alex Cross series by James Patterson & "Letters to a Young Therapist" by Mary Pipher. Maya finds a special connection with Shuri in "Black Panther." She says, "Shuri exhibits so much strength and determination to save her community throughout the film. I think my determination is what connects me the most to Shuri. I want to do all I can to improve the mental health of those in my community."
