Family counseling can help many types of family systems. Family counseling can be useful for families seeking to repair strained relationships within the family systems (Family Therapy Can Help for People in Recovery from Mental Illness or Addiction, n.d.). Family counseling can provide a space for families to receive additional support and strengthen the family’s emotional health. Family counselors have the ability to create a safe environment for families to:

  • Examine family dynamics/roles
  • Explore past traumas
  • Address familial conflicts
  • Identify generational struggles
  • Develop communication skills

Explore Past Traumas and Identify Generational Struggles

Certain traumas may be difficult for individuals to recognize because of a particular way of life passed down from generation to generation. Family counselors have the ability to help clients identify and differentiate between the client’s generational trauma and other potential traumas (Bray, 2023). These traumas may consist of:

  • Parenting styles
  • Unresolved issues within one’s family, culture, or community
  • Systemic issues (Racial trauma or oppression)
  • Childhood traumas (Physical, emotional, or sexual abuse)
  • Religious traumas

Developing Communication Skills

Family counseling can help improve communication among family members. Family counseling provides a structured space for family members to develop communication skills and enhance their relationships. Family counselors work with families to improve:

  • Verbal communication skills
  • Active listening
  • Assertive communication
  • Conflict resolution skills
  • Nonverbal communication skills
  • Body language
  • Facial expressions
  • Maintaining eye contact
  • Tone of voice

Main Topics Discussed in Family Counseling

According to Cherry (2024), Family counseling can be beneficial for families looking to discuss certain topics and enhance their understanding of:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Impact of divorce
  • Anger management issues
  • Effects of stress and trauma
  • Parenting issues
  • Dysfunctional Relationships

Family Counseling Therapeutic Approaches

There are different modalities of Family counseling that families may find to be beneficial.

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT)

Emotionally Focused Family Therapy is a style of therapy that aims to increase trust, safety, and bonding by identifying and repairing family ruptures (Linder, 2022). EFFT therapists understand that family conflict is an intersecting pattern of negative interactions rooted in the emotional processing of one’s need to feel close and connected to their family (Linder, 2022). EFFT does not identify the root of the familial conflict as issues with communication, parenting failures, or diagnosis of the parent or child. EFFT therapists believe the familial conflict is due to struggles with attachment and relational challenges.

Family Systems Therapy

Family Systems Therapy is a therapeutic approach based on 8 principles created by Murray Bowen. Family Systems Therapy will focus on the communication, emotional, and attachment concerns within the family system (Cherry, 2024). Family Systems Therapy will address:

  • Familial conflict
  • Independence versus dependence in the family system
  • Possible tendencies of familial projections
  • Explore families emotional processes
  • Emotional distancing between nuclear family members
