Workshop Description:

Utilizing the framework of the Therapeutic Powers of Play, participants will have hands-on experience with traditional, therapeutic, and table games. Ways to incorporate board games to align with therapy goals and treatment of diagnoses will be reviewed, along with examples of documentation for reimbursement. At least 5 popular board games will be taught and participants will practice therapeutic modifications for various populations. 6 Continuing Education (NBCC and APT- Special Topics)

Learning Objectives:

  • Counselor will learn the difference between playing a board game in counseling and utilizing competitive board games in Play Therapy.
  • Counselors will deepen their understanding of the Therapeutic Powers of Play, focusing on advanced techniques for integrating board and card games to enhance social relationships and increase personal strengths, utilizing the Powers of Play tracking sheet.
  • Counselors will learn advanced methods for utilizing board games to conduct detailed assessments, including identifying subtle behavioral and emotional cues related to social relationships, personal strengths, and executive functioning skills when playing competitive board games.
  • Counselors will explore and analyze different metaphors displayed in board game play, learning to identify and utilize these metaphors to deeping therapeutic gains when using competitive board games.
  • Counselors will engage in hands-on practice with at least five competitive board games, learning specific therapeutic benefits and strategies for utilizing these games in play therapy.
  • Counselors will learn strategies for extending the skills and lessons learned in board games to clients’ daily lives, focusing on practical applications for addressing relevant concerns on treatment plans and promoting overall emotional and mental well-being.
