Workshop Description:
This training will explore the biological mechanism underlying Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). First we will review the basics of frontal lobe executive function, basal ganglion regulation of behavior and subconscious conditioned learning. Then we will identify the neural correlates of OCD and how the behavior of OCD is linked to the biological mechanisms. Finally, we will discuss how psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy and surgical treatments impact the brain to reduce the symptoms of OCD.
Learning Objectives:
- Counselor will be able to explain the connections between and the roles of the frontal lobe, basal ganglion and memory centers
- Counselor will be able to describe the neurochemistry of the frontal lobe and basal ganglion
- Counselor will be able to describe how the neural correlates of OCD and how the structures are related to OCD behavior
- Counselor will be able to explain how psychotherapy can impact the brain to reduce the symptoms of OCD
- Counselor will be able to identify how pharmacotherapy can impact the brain to reduce the symptoms of OCD
- Counselor will be able to list how surgical treatments can impact the brain to reduce the symptoms of OCD
