Workshop Description:
Dr. Garrett will equip mental health professionals with practical tools, therapeutic strategies, and theoretical frameworks for addressing loneliness with their clients. Loneliness, often linked to feelings of isolation, disconnection, and emotional distress, can have profound effects on mental health and well-being. By exploring the underlying causes of loneliness—ranging from childhood attachment disruptions to social disconnection in adulthood—participants will learn to identify, assess, and treat loneliness using a variety of evidence-based interventions. The workshop will incorporate case studies, experiential exercises, and therapeutic techniques that can be tailored for individual, group, and couples counseling settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Understand the Psychological and Neurobiological Impact of Loneliness: Participants will explore the definition of loneliness, its psychological underpinnings, and its neurobiological effects, including the relationship between loneliness, attachment, and mental health.
- Identify the Root Causes of Loneliness: Participants will learn how to assess the multifaceted causes of loneliness in clients, including attachment issues, social isolation, trauma, and societal factors. Participants will also explore how to differentiate between situational loneliness and more chronic, existential forms of isolation.
- Apply Attachment Research to Treat Loneliness: Participants will examine how attachment styles influence experiences of loneliness and learn therapeutic interventions based on attachment theory to help clients build stronger, more fulfilling connections.
- Implement Evidence-Based Interventions for Loneliness: Participants will gain hands-on experience with a range of therapeutic interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and emotion-focused techniques, specifically designed to reduce loneliness and promote social connection.
- Utilize Experiential Exercises to Combat Loneliness in Therapy: Through experiential exercises, participants will practice using role-playing, creative expression (e.g., art, writing, Sandtray), and other techniques to help clients process and express their feelings of loneliness.
- Explore the Role of Technology and Social Media in Loneliness: Participants will evaluate the impact of digital communication and social media on loneliness, and explore therapeutic approaches for clients who struggle with feelings of isolation in the context of online relationships.
- Enhance Empathy and Connection in the Therapeutic Relationship: Participants will explore how to build a strong therapeutic alliance that fosters a sense of emotional connection, safety, and empathy, helping clients feel understood and supported as they work through loneliness in therapy.
