Workshop Description:
This dynamic training is designed for counselors and social workers seeking to deepen their understanding of disabilities and improve the accessibility of their therapeutic practices. Participants will explore practical strategies to create inclusive environments and ethically adapt therapy approaches to meet the diverse needs of clients with disabilities.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this training, participants will:
- Gain a comprehensive understanding of disability, including physical, intellectual/neurodevelopmental, and invisible disabilities.
- Explore ethical considerations for counseling clients with disabilities, including the importance of accessibility and knowing when to refer.
- Recognize and address microaggressions in therapy settings.
- Learn to assess and enhance the accessibility of their practice spaces and intake processes.
- Develop tools and techniques to adapt therapy methods for clients with intellectual and neurodevelopmental disabilities, including the use of visual aids, creative expression, and play.
- Navigate working with guardians, including understanding guardianship and conservatorship dynamics.
