Workshop Description:
Mental health professionals are called to embody wellness in their practice, not only for their clients but for their own professional sustainability. Developing a stable and emotionally grounded sense of self is critical in this journey. Wellness, as a mental and emotional practice, has been shown to significantly reduce burnout—especially among play therapists, who experience elevated rates of compassion fatigue. During this training, Dr. Garrett explores the Five-Factor Wellness Inventory, a comprehensive model that addresses all aspects of wellness while highlighting the importance of creativity in fostering resilience. Through engaging activities and research-based strategies, participants will create a personalized SMART self-care plan to mitigate compassion fatigue and promote enduring professional and personal well-being.
Learning Objectives:
- Describe the five core components of the Five-Factor Wellness Inventory Wheel (5F-WelI) and their relevance to professional well-being.
- Identify and articulate three key reasons why self-care is an ethical responsibility for mental health professionals, particularly Play Therapists and Supervisors.
- Demonstrate three play therapy techniques—such as the Wellness Map, Sickness Map, and Brave Play—that enhance self-care practices for both supervisees and play therapists.
- Develop a personalized self-care plan informed by the Creative Self research, integrating skills and insights from play therapy to support professional wellness and resilience.
